When life is stressful, your body needs even more rest and relaxation. Proper sleep helps to boost immunity, reduce anxiety and stress levels – all of which we need right now in our turbulent world with a lot of unknowns standing in our way.
When we sleep, our bodies repair and restore vital systems that help keep us alive. This includes muscular, skeletal, and cellular repair during our REM stages of sleep. Without adequate sleep our bodies do not have time to repair and so, weaken our systems, reduce our immunity and may affect our overall health.
Now more than ever it is time to care for our bodies, to protect ourselves against COVID-19 and take care of ourselves and our loved ones. A lot of us will be working from home for the foreseeable future and social events will be reduced to a minimum. During this time, see it as an opportunity to fine-tune your habits. Go to bed a little earlier and wake up with the sun, ready for your day’s work. Try setting your alarm at the same time every day, just as the sun rises if possible, and practice going to bed at the same time every day to perfect your routine.
Give your body every opportunity to fight and protect itself from the unknown. Give your body the time to recover and your mind the opportunity to switch off and truly relax among all the chaos that is happening around us.
Sleep may not be a cure for illness but it is certainly a great practice that works to protect immune systems, bodies, and minds when they need it most.
Give yourself the gift of sleep, rest and relaxation during this period of change and uncertainty in the world.
