If you huddle over your cell phone for extended periods of time, you’re doing more harm to your neck than you may realize. But the truth is, for every inch your head moves forward you’re putting an extra 10 pounds of pressure on your neck. As a result, a two-inch head tilt while sending texts or reading messages on your phone is like wearing a 20-pound sack of potatoes around your neck! Repeat this motion several times a day and you’re literally creating extra pain and extra strain for your neck and spine. Not only that, but extended periods of hunching over cell phones can create headaches as well as lower your lung capacity by up to 30%!
So how can you avoid this kind of pain in the neck? Limit your time on your mobile device, try holding it at eye level, take frequent breaks, and consider participating in exercises that will strengthen your neck and spine (yoga and Pilates are great). Be mindful of your everyday tech activities and do everything you can to support a healthy neck and spine.
