Subluxations Don’t Take Vacations

The summer, especially July, is when we all take well deserved vacations. A few years back, my family and I really enjoyed our one week camping trip in Yellowstone and Jackson Hole. Having never been there, we were astounded by its beauty and being in nature. Also, we really enjoyed the family time, and we look forward to hearing from you about your family vacations if you took one or the one you get to take later in the summer. We really truly enjoy the family community relationship we have with our practice members.

A very interesting thing happens on vacations… our behavior patterns change. We do lots of things that we don’t usually do. There’s nothing wrong with this at all. Actually it is a very good thing. We should do things that are different than our routine more frequently in my opinion.

One of the things we tend to do differently during vacations is that we change our health habits… especially eating and drinking. Before you think that isn’t true for myself and Dr. Richelle I will tell you it’s 100% true for us as well. I will be the first to admit that we consumed all kinds of meals and food we don’t usually eat in our normal healthy routine. We definitely weren’t eating as organic as we usually do. We definitely consumed more dairy, sugar, gluten and drinks with dinner than we do when we’re home. All things that are more of a stress on the nerve system and cause more subluxations. I probably gained 10 pounds, (time to consider a July detox!) Also, I did not bring a lot of my usual wellness regime supplies. I left my multivitamins and other supplements at home, I wasn’t exercising as per my usual regimen. Even worse, we didn’t get adjusted as much as usual because we were having such a great time despite the fact that the bedding was so uncomfortable! I also am glad to share we had a great time while doing it all! However I would like you to keep reading because that’s not really what this article is about.

I must tell, about mid-week, you I felt physically absolutely awful. Not because I was sick, but because I felt so much less energy, vitality, and wellbeing then I usually do. I felt exhausted, inflamed and worn out. I even had trouble waking up each day. This is despite the fact that I wasn’t working on all the people that we work on each day, and we were relaxing. One night, when we were sitting in a restaurant in Jackson Hole, Wyoming I looked around and thought the majority of these people, maybe even 90%, eat foods like this most of their lives. And they feel completely “normal.” Suffice it to say, when we got back home I was very eager to get back into my routine of taking care of myself and living well with a renewed vigor.

Good Health Comes From Long-Term Care

One of the most common things I have heard from people in the last 15 years of taking care of practice members when they discontinue or want to stop receiving chiropractic care as part of their healthy lifestyle is….“I just want to take a break for a couple weeks or months and see if I feel different without care.” This is one of the most ridiculous statements, yet I still hear it month after month. Why is it ridiculous?

I’ve been receiving chiropractic care for 30 years now and I am always continuing to move more towards living a healthier lifestyle. My 45th birthday is coming up and I’ve had care for my spine and nerve system pretty much on a weekly basis since I was 13. If I go a week, let alone a couple weeks, without having my spine checked I can most certainly feel it. Pretty much like I felt this week when I was off my healthy living habits. This is because the healthier a person is the MORE they will feel bad when they DON’T take care of themselves. This also means the reverse is true! People that are not living well and eat the way I did on my vacation 90% of the time generally don’t feel bad on a daily basis. The sicker one is, the LESS different they feel when they DON’T take care of themselves. However, it does catch up with them later and shows up as significant conditions or problems that develop over their lifetime.

Here’s a very important point…. If you stop your healthy behaviors like eating healthy, drinking good water, taking your multivitamins, eating organic food, getting your spine adjusted and don’t feel a difference, it does NOT mean that those things are not improving your health or not important to keep on doing. It absolutely does mean you’re not well enough yet to perceive the difference. Yes, you read that right…not well enough and you better keep up the good habits and lifestyle for a few more years until you get to the point where when you stop eating organic foods you feel the difference in your body. Until you get to the point where you stop getting adjusted for a week or two and it feels absolutely awful. Until you get to the point where you miss exercise for a few days or a few weeks that your energy drops down.

If that doesn’t happen, it doesn’t mean that the healthy habits aren’t working or not worth your while, it does mean that you’re not healthy or well enough yet to take an extended break from taking care of yourself.

Creating health is about eliminating destructive survival values like spinal subluxations, pesticides and toxins, lack of sleep, lethargic lifestyle choices, sugar, and artificial sweeteners. And at the same time, stacking up constructive survival values such as reducing subluxations, consuming good, clean water, getting good fuel into your body, moving your body appropriately, and overall living well. The clearer your neurological connection, the easier it is to make constructive health choices. The greater the loss of neurological connection, the harder it is to perceive the need for and to act on making healthier choices. It is all a process, not an event. The process of creating a new state within your being, body, and life.

Remember, no matter how good or bad you feel, subluxations don’t take vacations. Most likely during your vacation, you produced more subluxations than you did during your daily routine.
