Imagine walking into a doctor’s office and telling them that you have dizziness, pain running down one of your arms, and that you are stressed and want to be happier. Next, imagine that the doctor looks you up and down, writes out a prescription, hands it to you and says:“Get this prescription filled and you should be doing better. If you don’t feel better in a couple days come back, and if you do feel better then come back in about a month, and we’ll make sure this is still working for you.”
If that scenario happened when you walked into a medical doctor office, what would you think? The doctor didn’t do anything to assess the condition or ask you questions about your experience to determine the appropriate course of action. Unfortunately, many people have been taught that that’s what to expect when you go to a chiropractic office.
I’ll tell you right now: if you walk into a chiropractor’s office and they simply say lie down, push on your spine, and send you on your way, that is an office you want to stay away from.
Why, you ask?
We’re talking about the human spine. I don’t know about you but everything I’ve seen in human anatomy tells me that the human spine is quite important. In fact, you live your life through it. Your spine makes your organs work and your body parts move. You perceive your conscious reality through it and it involves every aspect of your body’s function. If there are concerns with its structure or neural behavior, then that should be appropriately and thoroughly assessed before any course of action is taken. Anything less than that is a band-aid at best.
What should you expect to happen when you walk into the office of a person who is going to determine the necessity of intervening at the level of your spine and nervous system?
Well, the interaction should start with a conversation about your health. Maybe you would like to discuss what’s bothering you and what you would like to have less of in the experience of your body, like pain or stress. Or, maybe you would like to talk about what you would like to get out of your body’s function and out of your experience of life that you’re maybe not reaching and what you would like to have more of, like better sleep or improved mental focus. Is there a better version of yourself that you can experience in your life? Health optimization does not begin and end with symptoms going away. Health optimization is all about moving towards optimizing your human potential.
After that conversation, it is appropriate to assess the integrity of your spinal structure and also your neural behavior patterns. There is a wide variety of assessment tools and different practitioners may have different techniques and styles. However, as a consumer the important thing is that the practitioner is actually performing both subjective and objective testing that you can see with your own eyes.
The doctor shouldn’t be performing any kind of spinal adjustment session on the day of the examination. If the examination is a real examination, then there’s will be data to review andsynthesizeto create a personalized plan for you. That takes time, which means you will leave the office and come back to review the results with them on another day.
When you return, the doctor should go over your examination results in a conversational way that is not fear based but rather relational to help you understand what’s going on in your anatomy and how the plan can impact you for the better. You should go over what the proposed plan would involve on their part and your part at home.
Also, at this point, finances should be reviewed, plainly and simply. No one should be surprised by a bill for services. You should completely understand what it would take for you to invest in your health and well-being to move toward the best version of yourself before any care is given.
Is there really any area of your life that all you want is a band-aid, something that is going to cover the problem temporarily without truly fixing anything? Is that good enough for your car? Is that good enough for your home? If it’s not good enough for those things, why would it be good enough for your spine, which controls and coordinates everything about you? Don’t let a band-aid chiropractor take the place of real spinal care and optimization.
