Have you ever heard anyone say: “Once you go to a chiropractor, you have to go forever”?
This is a very common cliché, but, like all clichés, there is some truth to it. That truth is not necessarily what you might think, though.
The truth is having a strong, healthy, well aligned spine is a key component, if not one of the top components, to maximizing your well-being and optimizing your life. Similar to eating healthy and exercising, having a healthy spine is a constructive contributor to a phenomenal quality of life. Making sure that your nervous system doesn’t have pressure on it is part of keeping yourself healthy long-term. It can help you live a healthier life, maximize your potential, and avoid many chronic and painful conditions and challenges.
There are many incredible research studies about the long-term benefits of receiving chiropractic care throughout one’s life from the time that you’re born. Dr. Richelle Knowles, D.C. and I both have received chiropractic care since our teens and our children have been adjusted since birth. I personally rarely go two weeks without getting my spine checked. When you find something that greatly contributes to your health and well-being you tend to continue to do it.
Since there are long-term lifelong benefits to regular chiropractic care, many people choose to make chiropractic part of their healthcare practices. That being said, when people walk into most chiropractic offices including ours, as far as I know, they don’t get chained down to a chair and forced to agree to come forever. No one forcibly makes one continue to get chiropractic care, eat healthy foods, go to their gym, or brush their teeth forever. So no, once you visit a chiropractor, it’s not something that you have to do forever if you choose not to. You can choose to receive the benefits of a healthy spine through chiropractic care for as long as you choose to receive those benefits. And though you may not want to come forever, you just may have such an outstandingly positive experience that you may decide to continue receiving chiropractic care on an ongoing wellness basis.
Like many things in life, once you find something that works you tend to keep doing it until it no longer serves you. Sometimes people will latch onto a new eating program, such as being paleo or vegetarian or gluten free, and then do that for quite a while until they find something that serves them better, whatever that may be. Sometimes people make a shift toward something that doesn’t end up being effective and then go back to what they were doing before. Sometimes the benefits are so great that the change is permanent.
Though it’s very common for people to experience pain relief with chiropractic, one thing’s for sure: The true benefits of chiropractic care multiply when they are experienced on a regular basis, rather than as a band-aid or as a short-term pain solution. Don’t get me wrong, the list is quite long of pain relief benefits that people experience through chiropractic, but that’s a very small benefit compared to the long-term benefits of longevity, quality of life, adaptability, improved function, conditions changing, and preventing future problems.
